Overview

What It Is LSVT LOUD is an intensive speech treatment originally developed for people with Parkinson’s disease who speak softly or with reduced vocal effort. A certified clinician leads high-effort voice exercises and carryover tasks, typically four times per week for four weeks.

How It Works Parkinson’s and related conditions often reduce amplitude of movement—including voice. LOUD retrains the person to use greater vocal effort and recalibrate what “normal loudness” feels like, supporting more intelligible speech through intensive motor practice and feedback—use-dependent plasticity in speech motor control.

Conditions - Primary, best-supported use: hypophonia and reduced speech intelligibility in Parkinson’s disease - Also used for selected other neurologic voice/speech problems - Often paired with LSVT BIG for whole-body amplitude training

How it is administered

Intensive schedule: typically 4 one-hour sessions per week for 4 weeks with a certified LSVT LOUD clinician, plus daily homework. Telehealth delivery is available in some programs.

The NPA Treatment Database lists this treatment in connection with 3 condition records. A database relationship does not establish effectiveness, safety, or suitability for an individual.

These controlled question pages reference this treatment through stored condition relationships.

Practical information

Insurance coverage

Often covered as speech therapy when medical necessity for Parkinson’s-related voice impairment is documented.

Cost information

Standard speech-therapy rates for 16 sessions plus evaluation; varies by region and coverage.

Results and outcomes described in the source record

Voice loudness and intelligibility gains are often measurable by the end of the 4-week protocol; maintenance practice is important.

Side effects and risks

Low risk. Vocal fatigue can occur; clinicians screen for contraindications to intensive voice work.

Research summary

Evidence Level: Strong (for Parkinson’s-related voice) What the research shows: Multiple trials support increased vocal loudness and improved intelligibility after LSVT LOUD in Parkinson’s disease, with benefits that can persist with practice. Key takeaway: A gold-standard intensive voice therapy for soft speech in Parkinson’s.

Research detail

Overview LSVT LOUD is an intensive, certified voice therapy protocol that retrains vocal effort and loudness, primarily for Parkinson’s disease.

Evidence Base and Published Work • Randomized and controlled studies support gains in loudness and intelligibility. • Maintenance programs and refresher sessions are commonly recommended.

Outcomes Outcomes most frequently described include louder, clearer speech and improved communication participation when the full protocol and homework are completed.

Questions to ask a provider

1. Is LSVT LOUD appropriate for my voice/speech changes in Parkinson’s (or related condition)? 2. How do I find a certified LSVT LOUD clinician near me or via telehealth? 3. What does the 4-week schedule and daily homework involve? 4. Will insurance cover the 16-session protocol? 5. Should I also consider LSVT BIG for movement?
